The United Kingdom and Australia are teaming up to combat the increasing issue of bothersome communications. These nations recently formalized an agreement to bolster collaborative efforts in probing and halting irritating automated calls, unsolicited text messages, and those crafty voice-based phishing schemes. This agreement signifies that Australia’s telecommunications regulatory body, ACMA, and their UK counterpart, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), will be exchanging intelligence and collaborating closely, particularly when dealing with enterprises operating in both countries. This collaboration holds significant weight as troublesome calls and fraudulent activities are a global concern, and halting them becomes incredibly challenging when they transcend geographical boundaries. Both the UK and Australia have emphasized that safeguarding individuals from these intrusive calls and messages is paramount.
The UKs Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) and Australia’s Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) are tackling the shared issue of businesses using illicit calls and texts to harass individuals. This partnership will enable these regulatory bodies to collaborate more efficiently.
Regarding the ACMA, their research revealed that over one in ten Australians confessed to engaging in online gambling within the preceding six months. This represents an increase from 8% in 2020 to 11% in 2021. These statistics originate from their ‘Australians’ Internet Gambling Prevalence’ analysis, conducted in June 2021.
