Nevadas gaming sector experienced a setback this week when a digital intrusion forced the State Gaming Control Board’s web portal offline. Although there are currently no signs that any confidential personal or monetary information was breached, the public-facing site has been inaccessible for several days.
The Board acknowledged the breach on social platforms, indicating that both its website and the Nevada Gaming Commission site were compromised. These portals serve as crucial sources for details on casino regulations, meeting calendars, media announcements, and industry data.
Fortunately, it appears the perpetrators were unable to penetrate the primary licensing and financial infrastructure, which are maintained on separate, more fortified servers.
Commissioner Kirk Hendrick refrained from elaborating on the specifics of the intrusion, but the Board guaranteed the public that they are collaborating with cybersecurity specialists to examine the event and establish a temporary website.
Curiously, no other government entities appear to have been impacted by this attack, potentially implying that the hackers were deliberately focused on Nevadas gaming sector.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board convened for its scheduled session yet remained tight-lipped regarding the recent cybersecurity breaches that shook the gambling sector.
In the preceding September, industry titans MGM Resorts International and Caesars Entertainment were targeted by complex cyber assaults, resulting in substantial monetary setbacks and harm to their standing.
Curiously, it was only in June of the previous year that Nevada lawmakers ultimately greenlit funding to update the Gaming Commission’s information technology infrastructure – systems that had been operational since the 1980s. Although not directly linked to any public-facing web portals, these systems are vital to the Commission’s functions and supervision of the gaming sector.
