Digital wagering earnings hit €205.9 million (roughly £179.1 million or $217.5 million) in the second trimester, a record high spurred by the flourishing online casino industry.

This represents a substantial rise compared to €145.2 million in the second trimester of 2022. The figure also surpasses the previous record of €196.4 million in the first trimester of this year by 4.9%.

Online chance games contributed €122 million in earnings during the trimester, a 51.6% increase compared to the same period last year. This is a new record for the sector, according to data from the regulatory body, the Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ).

Gamblers spent €32.4 billion on online casino games in the first trimester, another new record for Portugal. Slot machines accounted for 82.5% of all online casino spending, followed by French roulette at 7.6% and blackjack at 5.4%.

In terms of sports wagering, earnings in the sector reached €84 million, a 29.8% increase compared to 2022, but slightly down compared to the first trimester of this year.

Consumers spent €357.6 million on sports wagering during the trimester. This represents a 17.1% increase compared to the same period last year, but a 19.0% decrease compared to the second trimester. This is the second consecutive trimester of decline in Portugal.

Soccer accounted for 68.4% of all sports wagering in the second trimester. Around 20.1% of bets were placed on tennis, 7.4% on basketball, and 4.1% on other sports.

The number of online self-exclusions in Portugal exceeded 181,600.

The Portuguese Gaming Oversight Agency (SRIJ) has unveiled figures regarding individuals who have self-banned from online wagering. By the close of June, roughly 181,600 people had self-excluded from gambling on Portuguese websites.

During the second trimester, 33,800 individuals opted to self-restrict their access.

In the same timeframe, 190,200 new accounts were established with authorized gambling operators. This signifies that by the end of June, approximately 3.8 million individuals possessed online gambling accounts with SRIJ-approved platforms.

Traditional, brick-and-mortar gambling also witnessed a rise in earnings during the second quarter.

Land-based gambling revenue reached €66.8 million in the second quarter, reflecting a 6.8% surge compared to the corresponding period last year.

Of this sum, €49.6 million originated from physical slot machines, representing a 1.8% year-over-year increase. An additional €17.2 million stemmed from casino-style and bingo games, marking a 24.4% year-over-year growth.

American roulette generated €6.1 million in revenue during the quarter, baccarat contributed €5.1 million, and blackjack accounted for €6.1 million.
